Eco Credentials

At Garden Affairs we've been working with natural materials for over 20 years. We believe in being eco-aware in all aspects of our business, from general household recycling, to how we harvest our timber and optimising the delivery methods to reduce our carbon footprint.

Sustainability has always been at the core of our businesses and we're on an on-going journey to refine and improve our eco-credentials to help preserve the materials we work with and the space we operate in for generations to come.

Timber as a sustainable resource

The great thing about wood is that it is a natural carbon sink, taking CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it. Trees play a vital part in tackling climate change, a major cause of which is the imbalance of CO2 in the atmosphere caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

By cutting down trees before they begin to decay, releasing their stored carbon back into the atmosphere, and replacing the felled trees, harvesting timber can be a sustainable process that benefits the environment.

So your timber garden building is something of an eco-hero: an important player in the continuing success and expansion of sustainable forests, and natural storage for unwanted carbon. All you have to do is celebrate that by looking after your building and helping the beautiful, natural timber continue its long and useful life.

Managed forests

The timber used in our garden buildings is sourced from sustainable plantations and managed forests, mainly from Norway, Sweden and Finland. The proximity of these forests to our manufacturers keeps transportation costs down. Their colder climate means the timber grows more slowly, creating a denser structure.

The procurement of timber is promised to be harvested from sustainably managed sources, and it is certified by the PEFC (Program of the Endorsement of Forest Certification) or FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). These timbers come from forests in which more timber is planted than is used.

We plant two trees for every tree harvested.

Above and beyond recycling

We believe in integrating sustainability in every process throughout Garden Affairs, including general office & on-site waste.

After creating a partnership with Grist Environmental, and the new ability to recycle soft plastics, Garden Affairs were able to increase recycling efforts by 75%! Grist Environmental also recycle our excess timber for use in OSB pallets, animal bedding and biomass pellets for domestic boilers.

Now engrained into the Garden Affairs culture, the small, but green team continue to identify new ways to ensure that no recyclable waste goes to landfill!

Living Sedum Roofs

On many of the flat roof buildings we install, customers choose to replace the lost section of nature by installing a bed of living sedum comprising flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae.

A living sedum roof is an eco-friendly roof finish that looks great and adds to the building's insulation properties, reduces sound transfer and creates a haven for wildlife. You can order the kit to install yourself anytime or have our team of expert installers lay the sedum while constructing your garden room.

Our Green Commitment

As part of our continued investment in sustainability, by 2030, we will achieve all of the below to help create a greener, more sustainable future.

  • Invest in a fleet of Euro 6 engine transportation.

  • Power our Trowbridge show site using 100% renewable energy.

  • Become a paperless office.
