It all started in 2001 when Richard an engineer was working from home using the back bedroom of their recently renovated Victorian home in Bath as his office. With their second child on the way, Richard was soon to be ousted from his office for the baby’s nursery. After spending years renovating their Victorian home in Bath, moving was not an option, they couldn’t afford a loft conversion and so they turned to the only available space left – the garden.
Richard a handy sort, decided to build his own office in the garden (a novel concept at the time) and attended woodwork classes at the local college in the evenings to learn joinery to make his own doors & windows. It has to be said, we were pretty impressed with the result. But not as impressed as our friends, who begged us to make garden buildings for them. How could we say no?
And so Garden Affairs was born. It’s been pretty much non-stop from there.
Our promise. When we built that office in our garden, we started with perfection in mind. It’s what drove us throughout that project, and continues to drive us every day. Painstaking research and planning. Hunting down premium suppliers. Finding the best, sustainably sourced timber. This is what sets us apart from the rest.
Richard had created a new office space in his garden and it wasn't long until friends and family wanted the same. With a limited choice of suppliers at the time, Richard and his wife Poppy saw an opportunity to undergo a venture together.
Poppy, a marketing consultant created the first website and Garden Affairs officially set up shop.
Two years since starting their venture, and Garden Affairs was in the black!
Jude, Richard's sister also joined the team as the first full-time employee. It was a slow start, but Garden Affairs were on the up and working all hours of the day to deliver their services across the South.
The team of three rounded off the successful year with a 'party' comprising of a Thai Takeaway and a few glasses of wine.
The trio set up their show site in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. More and more buildings went up, and it wasn't long until customers from all over the country came seeking a smart garden office.
Garden Affairs took on more suppliers and continued to grow its product range.
One decade in and the fruits of their labour really ramp up as popularity for garden rooms - specifically offices grow year on year.
The team, now 7 strong, hit the impressive milestone of 1000 buildings sold in the 10 years since starting.
In 2017 the final stages of product development were completed and the Linea Garden Room became available to the public.
The iconic modern rooms featuring no roof overhang redefined what a garden office could be, and became a staple of Garden Affairs.
20 years since starting the company, Poppy, one of the founding directors becomes the first Garden Affairs employee to retire.
The legacy which Poppy helped create will always be a foundation of the company as the team expands and the company continues to grow.
“Having shown their own office building and explained the construction I placed an order for my own building. It arrived on time, was erected in a day, and has daily provided excellent accommodation for my office/studio/workshop. I am delighted and am proud to show it off to all my friends and business associates who are so impressed with 'My' beautiful building."”
