Electric Installation Options

When we are installing your garden building, we offer two options:

first fix electrics

First fix wiring

First fix is a trade term referring to the installation of electrical wiring that you need for the lighting and sockets specified. This process is completed during the assembly of the building, enabling cables to be concealed in available cavities.

Typically lighting cables are run over the roof boards and sockets/heating cables under the floor. Your building is then ready for a qualified electrician to complete the electrical installation. (The trade terms for this second phase is the Second fix).

Full electrical packages

With a full electrical package, Garden Affairs will install your first fix wiring, supply all of the fittings and appliances required for your specification and arrange for a qualified electrician to complete the installation. We are able to supply the following options:

  • Double sockets
  • Outdoor sockets
  • Wall-mounted heaters
  • Ceiling, wall & outdoor lights
  • Standard and dimmable light switches
  • Data cabling
  • Fuse board

Our fixed pricing does not account for the cost to connect the building to an appropriate power supply as this can vary. When budgeting, consider the connection cost in addition to the electrical package. More details & a price range below.

Connection to the house

So you've picked your electrical package and it's all installed. Now all you need to do is switch on the power – and that needs a connection to your house.

Most supply cables can be installed above ground by fixing the cable to a wall or fence. In some cases, digging a trench and laying an armoured cable between the main supply in your home and garden building may be required. This work should only be performed by a qualified electrician.

With a full electrical package during the second fix installation, our electrician can calculate a quote to run the supply. Every home is different and it may take a bit of know-how to work out the best solution. The majority of connections cost between £600 - £800. (This depends on the complexity of the installation and Garden Affairs would always defer to the advice of the electrician).

FAQs

How long does the electrical installation take?

If we're installing your garden building, we can complete the first fix electrics whilst assembling the building. Our sub-contracted electrician will be out approximately one week later to finish the second fix installation.

How is the power supplied to the garden building?

Power is supplied from the mains connection in your property. We use armoured cables to wire up the garden building without needing to dig up the garden.
